Moving Communities from Stories to Strategy
Beyond Photography. Beyond Research.
Photovoice is a globally recognized participatory, arts-based research methodology that uses photography and personal narrative to examine lived experience, surface community knowledge, and inform action.
For more than a decade, I have designed and facilitated Photovoice initiatives across nonprofit, public health, healthcare, education, government, and international settings. My work brings together visual storytelling, participatory research, facilitated dialogue, and strategic inquiry to ensure that the people closest to an issue are meaningfully represented in the conversations and decisions that shape their communities.
From community needs assessments and workforce development to health equity, behavioral health, recovery, and organizational learning, I translate lived experience into insight, insight into strategy, and strategy into community-informed action.
How I Use Photovoice To Create Impact
From Research Question to Community Action
I provide end-to-end Photovoice consulting, from project design, facilitator training, and participant engagement to qualitative analysis, reporting, exhibitions, and action planning. Organizations can engage me for a complete initiative or for specialized support at any stage of the process.

Photovoice strengthens community engagement by creating an accessible, participatory way for residents to share their experiences, identify priorities, and influence the decisions that affect their lives.

International & Cross-Cultural Partnerships
Strengthening Communities Through Participatory Research
Community challenges are best understood by the people who live them. I partner with international NGOs, universities, public health organizations, and community-based agencies to design and facilitate culturally responsive Photovoice projects that elevate local voices and transform lived experience into actionable insight.
Whether working with youth, healthcare workers, educators, refugees, or underserved communities, I help organizations build trust, engage participants as partners, and collect meaningful qualitative data that informs program design, evaluation, advocacy, and sustainable community development.
My approach combines participatory research, visual storytelling, and capacity building, ensuring that communities are not simply the subjects of research—they become active collaborators in identifying challenges, developing solutions, and shaping their own future.

Organizations use this approach to:
Engage communities as active partners rather than research participants
Strengthen culturally responsive program design
Identify community strengths, barriers, and emerging needs
Inform strategic planning and policy development
Evaluate program outcomes through participant perspectives
Build local leadership and long-term facilitation capacity
Support grant reporting and donor communication with authentic community narratives
International Experience
My work has included collaborations with international nonprofit organizations, educators, and community leaders across diverse cultural settings. These partnerships have focused on using Photovoice to strengthen community engagement, support youth development, build facilitator capacity, and explore issues including mental health, education, identity, and community well-being.
I have delivered training, facilitated participatory research projects, and presented internationally on the use of Photovoice as a tool for community development, public health, and social change. My experience working across cultures allows me to adapt training and facilitation to local contexts while maintaining ethical, inclusive, and community-centered practices.
From local neighborhoods to global communities, meaningful and sustainable change begins by listening to the people whose voices matter most. Through Photovoice, I help organizations transform those voices into insight, action, and lasting impact.

The training is designed for professionals who serve as trusted connectors between communities and the systems intended to support them.

Through Our Lens
Community Perspectives on End-of-Life Care Through Photovoice
National Research Partnership
Through Our Lens was a national Photovoice initiative led by Compassion & Choices in partnership with community leaders, researchers, and organizations across the United States. As Principal Consultant and Photovoice Specialist representing Transformative Arts Project, I collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to design and facilitate a culturally responsive participatory research project that elevated the voices of communities historically underrepresented in conversations about end-of-life care.
Project Overview
The project engaged participants from across the United States in documenting their experiences, beliefs, and cultural perspectives surrounding serious illness, caregiving, and end-of-life decision-making through photography and personal narrative.
Using the Photovoice methodology and the SHOWED framework, participants reflected on how culture, family, faith, identity, and lived experience shape healthcare decisions. Their photographs became powerful visual evidence that complemented traditional research by revealing barriers, strengths, and opportunities for more equitable and culturally responsive care.
The project intentionally centered voices from communities that have historically experienced disparities in healthcare, ensuring that their stories informed education, advocacy, and future policy conversations.
My Role
As Principal Consultant, I designed the Photovoice process, developed the facilitator training and participant materials, trained facilitators in culturally responsive Photovoice practices, provided technical assistance throughout implementation, and collaborated on qualitative analysis of participant narratives.
I also designed and curated the virtual exhibition, created a professionally designed magazine-style publication showcasing participant photographs and stories, and co-presented the project's findings alongside Compassion & Choices at the University of Texas. The project culminated in a national research poster highlighting both quantitative and qualitative findings and demonstrating the value of Photovoice as a participatory research methodology.
Communities Represented
Participants represented diverse communities across the United States, including:
Latino communities
African American communities
Asian American communities
Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities
Native American communities
Faith-based communities
LGBTQ+ individuals
Family caregivers
Individuals with lived experience navigating serious illness and end-of-life decisions
Community & National Impact
The project demonstrated how community-generated photographs and narratives can deepen understanding of healthcare experiences beyond what surveys and statistics alone can capture.
Participant stories revealed important themes around cultural traditions, family decision-making, spirituality, communication with healthcare providers, systemic barriers, and the importance of honoring individual values at the end of life.
The findings informed national conversations around health equity, culturally responsive care, patient advocacy, and community engagement. Project outcomes were shared through a virtual gallery, educational resources, conference presentations, and a national research poster, providing healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community organizations with practical insights for improving end-of-life care.
Project Outcomes
National participatory research initiative using the Photovoice methodology
Facilitator training and technical assistance provided across multiple communities
Participants representing diverse cultural, racial, and geographic backgrounds
Development of a virtual Photovoice exhibition
Design and publication of a magazine-style project booklet featuring participant stories
Co-presented research findings at the University of Texas
National research poster integrating qualitative and quantitative findings
Contributed to ongoing education, advocacy, and policy conversations surrounding culturally responsive end-of-life care

Project Overview
For more than five years, I have led Youth Voices in Focus, a community-wide Photovoice initiative that empowers young people to explore topics surrounding mental health, identity, resilience, and belonging through photography and personal storytelling.

A cornerstone of the initiative has been developing youth leadership. I trained members of the Frederick Youth Council to become Photovoice facilitators, equipping them to lead activities with younger participants through collaborations with the Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County and other community partners. This peer-led approach has expanded youth leadership while creating sustainable opportunities for young people to engage their communities.
Community Impact
Youth Voices in Focus has evolved into an ongoing community campaign that uses visual storytelling to spark conversations around youth mental health throughout Frederick County.
Participant work has been featured through public exhibitions, youth talent showcases, community events, and installations that invite residents, educators, healthcare professionals, nonprofit organizations, and local leaders to better understand youth perspectives.
The initiative has received media coverage from DC News Now and the Frederick News-Post, with exhibitions recognized by the City of Frederick and community partners for advancing youth voice, mental health awareness, and community engagement.
